I think it is important to make school fun and when school is fun you don't get kids waking up in the morning and say oh do I have to come to school again so we embrace technology because it helps us make learning more engaging I believe that when kids are engaged when kids are interested that's where learning takes place the kids are really from a very different world now I really to reach out to the kids you need to be savvy with technology if you are not savvy with technology you're going to lose the kids in the school pick up top 20 questions neon secondary school is a typical school in Singapore where we take in students with different academic abilities and we have about 1500 and 12 students in this school and in the all come from the neighborhood we get students from the age of 13 materials and very innovative teaching ideas to engage the students in the classrooms in the early 1990s the teachers really are the monopoly of knowledge and they are the one that comes to class to globe for best practices we are in the process of watching a model lesson that's being run by my colleague here and the whole process of us watching the lesson is to gain some kind of points from her lesson and also to provide our feedback we discuss it to come up with a better lesson because definitely learning grows with sharing and communication and there's definitely in scope for improvement going to engage the kids and when you engage the kids that is where real learning takes place

Tips for Effective Lectures

my topic today is lectures and I wanted to talk a little bit about lectures because they are one of the most maligned forms of teaching strategies that exist it's often called the easiest thing to do but I want to caution you as professors or budding professors that lectures do take a fair bit of advanced preparation you have to very carefully go through the textbook and figure out what can the students learn on their own and what needs to be further expanded on in a lecture format you can use a lecture to present a lot of material in a short period of time to be sure that your students have actually all received the same information and have heard the same examples however you need to be careful that you're not just seen as the talking head who's sitting there going bla bla bla bla bla make sure that your mannerisms and your use of vocabulary doesn't really interfere with the students learning you have to find a way to tailor your language in your lecture to suit the level of student that you have in front of you which is something that a textbook cannot do a textbook is printed and that's it that's what there is so your job is to take that textbook or that course information and make it come to life there are a lot of things with modern technology that can make your lecture much more lively you can do things like intersperse say every 15 or 20 minutes you can intersperse with video clips you can intersperse with things like OneNote where you can set up questions for the students to answer about the content you just delivered you have to remember that people's listening power is really only about 15 or 20 minutes and after 20 minutes you need to switch activities even if it's just to stop and have the students write down one or two things that they remember right away from lecture the one of the big limitations of lectures is that people sometimes just doze through them and they don't really retain the information so you have to find ways to take what you've delivered in a lecture and then present it in another way that's reinforced for those students such as having them take case studies and apply that information in smaller working groups so you can present standardized information to a large group of students it can be taped and students can then look at it later on but you really need to do something to make that more interactive so that the students also then have an opportunity to ask questions and where you have an opportunity to question the students to make sure that what you've tried to convey is actually what came across to the students
